چکیده

The control of the pulmonary ventilation is a central problem in the physiology of muscular exercise. The hypothesis that the respiratory center is stimulated by chemical changes in the arterial blood has been defended by Gesell (1), Haldane (2), and Henderson (3). In addition to this type of stimulation, Krogh and Lindhard (4) have discussed the anticipatory hyperventilation preceding and immediately following the onset of exercise. This they attribute to cerebral cortical stimulation. Recently, Harrison and his associates (5, 6) have maintained that the stimulus for the increase in pulmonary ventilation in men and dogs during very moderate exercise, either active or passive, is not chemical, but is reflex. Comroe and Schmidt (7) confirmed these findings in anesthetized dogs, using either electrical stimulation of the lumbar anterior spiral roots, or else passive movements of the limbs. In view of the importance of this problem, we have repeated Harrison's experiments, which

Aim and background: Despite improved techniques of cardiopulmonary bypass and postoperative care, pulmonary dysfunction after CABG is still a major cause of postoperative morbidity. Different methods of pulmonary ventilation have been used for lung protection. But has not definite conclusions about the effects of these methods. The aim of this study was determining the effect of pulmonary vent...

Pulmonary vascular response of the coati to chronic hypoxia.

The unusually muscular pulmonary arteries normally present in cattle and swine residing at low altitude are associated with a rapid development of severe pulmonary hypertension when those animals are moved to high altitude. Because these species lack collateral ventilation, they appear to have an increased dependence on hypoxic vasoconstriction to maintain normal ventilation-perfusion balance, ...

The clinical utility of cardiopulmonary exercise testing: results of a university hospital

Objective: To determine the main reasons for cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) referrals in our hospital over the last two years; to evaluate clinical usefulness of CPET. Methods: We included 207 patients between 17 and 76 years of age. For every patient, we measured electrocardigraphy (ECG), arterial blood gases, spirometry, maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV) and diffusing capacity. CPET w...

The effect of hypernatraemia on ketamine anaesthesia in male rats

We studied the effects of a single ketamine injection in an experimental model of chronic hypernatraemia in rats. Three groups, each of 20 male Wistar rats were chosen for the experiment; the control group was given water and the test groups were given 1% (group 1) and 2% (group 2) NaCl solutions for two weeks. All groups were fed with the same diet, containing about 0.5% salt. Other living con...
